Comcast Expands Fiber Network, Bringing Next-Generation Internet to the City of Corcoran

Comcast has grown its fiber-rich network to nearly 500 homes and businesses in Corcoran, Minnesota.

The nearly $4 million network expansion project — which spans over 70 miles — was completed in partnership with the Minnesota Office of Broadband and Minnesota Border-to-Border Broadband grant program, Hennepin County, and the City of Corcoran.

Comcast celebrated the project’s completion with a ribbon cutting event at Corcoran City Hall attended by city and Hennepin County officials, along with elected officials.

“We want to thank Comcast and all of our partners for their support in this project that ensures residents across the city will have access to high-speed internet, providing access to this essential service to homes and businesses alike,” said Tom McKee, Mayor of Corcoran. “This significant expansion was the culmination of a lot of hard work and will make it easier for our residents to work, learn, and connect from home.”

The expansion, which broke ground in Sept. 2023, brings Xfinity’s next-generation network to area residents and businesses with speeds fast enough to power hundreds of connected devices at once along with world-class reliability and security.

The effort is an important part of Comcast’s rollout of multi-gig Internet speeds and adds to the company’s investment of more than $525 million in technology and infrastructure across Minnesota over the past three years, focused on network expansion and upgrades.

“We remain focused on ensuring that everyone across Hennepin County has reliable internet access no matter where they live,” said Hennepin County Commissioner Kevin Anderson. “Thank you to Comcast, the City of Corcoran and funding from the State of Minnesota’s Border to Border Broadband program for their support in helping us further that goal.”

During the event, Comcast presented a $2,500 donation to Mobile Hope as part of its ongoing commitment to invest within the local communities they serve.

Mobile Hope is a non-profit located in Corcoran that seeks to build a culture of achievement within mobile home communities through education, healthy activities, resource connections, and faith development. They have additional locations in Blaine and Osseo, Minn.

“We are thrilled to complete this expansion project ensuring that Corcoran residents and businesses have access to reliable, high-speed Internet,” said Rachel Johnson, vice president, Sales and Marketing, Comcast Midwest. “As the world becomes increasingly digital, serving local communities is a top priority for us. We are so happy to bring our next-generation broadband network to Corcoran and meet the city’s present and future connectivity needs.”

Following the ribbon cutting ceremony attendees were served refreshments and treats courtesy of Coffee on Wheels, a local vendor that offers organically grown coffees and operates out of a bus beloved by its customers.
