Minnesota’s unemployment rate is at historic low levels, and the tech industry in particular is feeling the labor shortage impacts. To help address the issue, the Minnesota High Tech Association (MHTA) today gathered thought leaders, employers and solutions providers to share best-practices to attract, develop and retain the technology workforce of the future with, “Tech Talent: Strategies For Your Next Gen Workforce.”
Comcast Vice President of Human Resources for the Twin Cities, Chris Passaro, joined industry professionals to discuss a variety of innovative programs and approaches to re-deployment of critical skills in the workplace. Passaro emphasized the thriving environment of today’s tech industry, and the need to make the necessary investments to help keep a vibrant workforce.
“We’re in the top 25 cities in the U.S. and there is clear evidence of a labor shortage on the horizon,” said Passaro. “We can and must stay ahead of the talent needs by fostering an environment where people want to come to and stay.”
A major ongoing hiring initiative at Comcast for technology careers centers on veterans and the military community. For example, over the past several years the company has adopted new tools to help hiring managers better translate military skills and effectively process military resumes to match applicants to the right jobs. In fact, other local businesses can use this approach to more effectively screen veterans during the hiring process through PsychArmor.
“We’re proud of the work we’ve done to help bring more military veterans into the private sector,” said Passaro. “These individuals bring a strong work ethic and the right skills to make a real impact, and we want to make certain our hiring managers and recruiting teams understand how a military background, skills and training transfers to our environment.”
In addition to partnering with key Twin Cities veteran’s organizations, Comcast is also reaching out to the workforce of tomorrow by teaming up with local colleges and schools to promote the many opportunities in technology. In addition, the company is working to ensure all families have the chance to benefit from today’s tech revolution through Internet Essentials, designed to bridge the digital divide.
