In today’s world, access to the internet and knowing how to effectively leverage its power can mean the difference between success and struggle for all ages.
The internet is an essential tool that helps kids connect to homework and educational resources, assists adults in their search for better jobs and managing healthcare and finances, and keeps users connected to what’s going on in the world. Unfortunately, a digital divide exists in both Minnesota and across the country that prevents everyone from sharing in those benefits.
Low income households are hit hardest by the digital divide. According to the U.S. Census American Community Survey, only 63 percent of all Minnesota households with an annual income of less than $35,000 have a broadband subscription at home. That’s 21 percent less than the total number of households who currently subscribe to broadband in the state.
Fortunately, the digital divide is being addressed on a variety of fronts, including low-cost internet service options, affordable computer technology, online and in-person training, and more.
Comcast External Affairs Vice President, Ron Orlando presents an overview of the movement currently underway to bridge the digital divide and the work being done to assure no family or individual is left behind. You can read his column from “Minnesota Cities Magazine” here.
