Comcast is proud to support the 2020 Minneapolis Community Connections Conference, held Saturday, February 1 at the Minneapolis Convention Center. This annual gathering is a free event that fosters connections between the residents of Minneapolis, community groups, neighborhoods and local government, featuring important information, networking opportunities, panels, speakers, performances, and more.
A primary theme of this year’s conference was the upcoming 2020 Census and the community-wide goal of ensuring everyone is counted in 2020. With its focus of online participation, the 2020 Census provides Comcast with an important opportunity to educate as many residents as possible about Internet Essentials, the company’s low-cost broadband adoption program.
Comcast Government & External Affairs executive director Tony Williams was one of the architects of the original Internet Essentials program. He spoke to the conference about the company’s goals to help close the digital divide for low-income Americans, and how the program can serve as an important tool for making it possible to have everyone participate in the 2020 Census.
Williams also talked with Al McFarlane, president and CEO of Insight News about the company’s engagement with the 2020 Census, and the importance of connecting with citizens who could be left behind.
“Comcast has always been about closing the digital divide,” said Williams. “As a local business, we are vitally interested in the success of the communities we serve. One example is the fact that more than 172,000 Minnesotans have already benefited from Internet Essentials, with more than eight million nationwide.”
Williams added, “You can’t talk about being healthy as a company without talking about our communities.”
