Comcast Midwest Region was recognized for its support of a digital navigator position and additional programming to serve the St. Paul Public Library’s (SPPL) Mobile Library.

To mark its contributions, The Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library hosted a small celebration outside the Front Hi-Rise building in St. Paul.

Since 2018, Comcast has funded its Mobile Library, a dynamic community resource that brings the rich offerings of the library, as well as resources, services, and other pilot programs to neighborhoods throughout the city. More specifically, the digital navigator position supports patrons with a variety of digital needs, from learning English to general digital skills, accessing online career resources or civic participation.

“At Comcast, we believe digital opportunity is essential to building thriving communities,” said Stacey Nelson-Kumar, Director of Community Impact for Comcast’s Midwest Region. “Supporting the Mobile Library and funding a digital navigator is part of our commitment to ensuring every resident of St. Paul has access to the tools and skills they need to succeed in today’s connected world.”

While book mobiles were once a staple of many libraries’ outreach, many made a resurgence during the pandemic. Through it all, SPPL’s Mobile Library continued operating due to strong community demand.

Last summer, SPPL purchased and retrofitted a new vehicle, which employees say has been a big improvement in helping deliver their full suite of services to 28 locations.

For many families, school-aged children and seniors across the city, it now serves as their home library, fostering a joy of discovery, strengthening community connection and supporting lifelong learning.

“It was amazing to partner with Comcast to fund the digital navigator as part of the new and improved Mobile Library,” said Rebecca Ryan, Deputy Director of Public Services at the St. Paul Public Library. “We’re really excited to continue to develop relationships and invest in bringing all kinds of library services to meet people where they are.”

Tee Chang, a library associate and former digital navigator for the Mobile Library, said local residents have utilized the Mobile Library’s resources to learn everything from tips about cybersecurity to how to use Facebook. And for patrons, each experience is rewarding.

“One of our patrons always says, ‘I’m very grateful that you’re here. This resource is invaluable to me. Thank you,’” he said.
